Ann Ferguson: Artist, Quilt Maker, Teacher

Australian quilt artist and teacher, Ann Ferguson, started designing and creating quilts in Darwin, NT in 1997. In 2000, she started teaching patchwork and quilting for the Council of Adult Education. At the time, Ann was also teaching English as a Second Language with the NT Education Department. In 2002 she moved to Maleny, Queensland, and chose to focus on quilt making as a career. Ann is currently a practising artist and teacher in the quilt industry.

Ann is gaining recognition nationally and internationally through her prize-winning quilts, awards, magazine projects and workshops. Her quilt “Sea, Stone, Sand and Sky – Darwin Cliffs” which won first prize in the 2005 Australian Quilt Show has travelled internationally to the European Quilt Expo at Lyon, France, and to both International Quilt Shows at Huston and Chicago as part of an exhibition entitled “The Culture of My Country”. Ann currently has a quilt in the Australian Quilts in Public Places exhibition on show in Melbourne.

Original designs by Ann have been featured in a number of Australian publications and her quilt, “Global Village”, was part of the 2006 Down Under Quilts Calendar. This quilt also won 2nd place for contemporary quilts at the 2006 Ekka. Her quilts often use vibrant colours and ethnic fabrics as well as innovative design and traditional and contemporary techniques.

Ann enjoys teaching quilting at all levels and encourages creativity, and confidence in her students. You will be able to catch up with Ann and see some of her African inspired quilts in September 2008.
